Skier to Skier builds the best magnet in the industry. They are high quality magnets which are
built to last! Our magnets are in slalom and jump courses around the world - we have
shipped to over 33 different countries! They are also used at many ski schools
around the nation, sold by all the major dealers, and have been used in numerous high profile record tournaments including
the U.S Open, the WaterSki Pro Tour, US Nationals, Regionals, and the World Championships! We
support the industry and give to USA WaterSki. Don't be fooled by some guy
working out of his garage that says a 1.2 pound magnet will work for all systems
- that is a very little bitty magnet. We are the
largest supplier of magnets in the water ski industry.
Key Benefits
- Hard Spongex foam casing our magnets last.
- Exact magnet core placement for true timing accuracy.
- PVC center to allow easy installation.
- Double-zapped magnetic material to insure a strong and evenly distributed magnetic
field.
- North pole of magnetic field is clearly and permanently marked.
- Slalom Magnets feature an extended PVC pipe core for those who like to
space them with PVC pipe spacers.
Questions:
- Which slalom magnet if for me?
Slalom Economy: We designed this magnet as an economy choice
for skiers. The S-E is great magnet that is just slightly buoyant and very compact.
Weighs under 1.4 pounds and works well with PerfectPass as long as you do
not want to go real deep. At $14.50 -- it is hard to beat.
Slalom One: We designed this magnet for PerfectPass. The S-One
is great magnet that is just slightly buoyant and very compact. With
over 10,000 S-1 magnets in use, there has to be something great about this
magnet!
Slalom One - X: Utilizes
the same magnetic deflection technology as our Jump Magnets. The S-1-X is
roughly 20% stronger that the standard S-1. Other features are a
7/8inch hole in the middle and more buoyancy. This is quickly becoming
the favorite. Can be used in the same course with S-1's.
Good choice for getting the magnets below prop depth yet ensuring accurate
sensing.
Slalom Two: This magnet was
designed to be used with timers that are not as sensitive as the PerfectPass
timer. The S-2 is our strongest magnet and works great with all
timers. Also can be used for PerfectPass timer when you want to place
magnets extra extra deep. This magnet is huge and will destroy the
magnetic stripe on a credit card in your wallet if you get it to
close. Works great for timing submarine races too. Do not mix with S-1 magnets in the same course.
.
- Will Skier to Skier magnets work with all timing
systems? YES!
We have a magnet for all timing systems.
- How can a magnet on a surveyed course produce
a bad time? This is an easy
one! The better timing systems measure the center of the
magnet. If the magnet is tipped or is molded into the buoy at an
angle, the actual trigger point on the surface will move in relationship to
the angle of the magnet. Thus, if the end gate magnet is tipped toward
the course and the three ball magnet is tipped toward the end gates, a
perfectly good pass could register as fast. Our magnets are machined
by precise specialty machines to make certain the magnet is always in line
with the buoy. You do not have to worry about tipped magnets with our
magnets.
- I see some magnets encased in hard PVC pipe. Do
you use PVC pipe? NO!
We have a deal with Spongex. We use their very durable PVC foam. Yes it
cost more than pipe, but we think it is worth it. We can hold the magnetic media to
exact angular tolerance using Spongex foam. Our concern with any type
of injection molding process is that the magnet may tip during manufacture
and move the trigger point at the water's surface away from the actual buoy
line. Moreover, we believe that our buoys are
much less likely to destroy your ski or prop if you hit them.
- How many magnets are in your buoys?
Number of magnets means little in magnetic timing. There are basically
three items to consider when considering magnet strength. One:
Mass of magnet when magnetized. 2 discs that are a
half inch thick will be stronger than 3 discs that are a quarter inch
thick. Watch out for people who stack up discs after they are
magnetized --this produces a vastly weaker magnet.. Two:
Type of magnetic media -- we use long lasting permanent ceramic media -- not
the cheap stuff. Three:
Deflection -- we magnetize our magnets to maximize the shape of the field.
- Looks like you cut the top off the buoy to
build the magnets -- is that going to fall apart? NO!
The most labor intensive way to build a magnet is the way we do it. We
know of no other way to insure complete perpendicular alignment to the
surface of the water. We utilize very expensive and strong adhesives
in building our magnets. They will not fall apart!
- Do you have any pictures of how some people install
magnets? YES!
For liability reasons, we do not endorse any particular method of installation.
The key is to install the magnets with safety in mind. Some of
our customers have sent us some pictures -- including a drawing of Ed
Brazil's famous finger trap method of adjusting your course buoys. FYI
-- this page has a ton of pictures and may take a while to load. View
at your own risk and remember: be safe! Click here for some pictures.
- Does all buoy timing use the same
magnets? Yes! All buoy
timing uses the same exact magnets. Jut more of them. All buoy
timing requires one magnet for each boat guide and gate. We recommend
using the two segment timing method in practice and all buoy timing in tournaments.

Segment Timing Tolerances. Or Click
