Here is a great way to install a Spongex boat guide.  This installation will last years.  The keys to it's great success are:

1.  Using nylon rope and gray electrical PVC pipe on the top -- both are very durable in the sun.

2.  Running the latex up through the boat guide.  This allows for a longer latex tube which means greater ability to compensate for large water height changes.  

Obviously, you will want to rig your boat guides to work for you in a manner that will meet your safety requirements.
